Troubleshooting

SymptomCheck
EPICS headers/libraries not foundBuild Base first; set EPICS_BASE and EPICS_HOST_ARCH to that installation. See build discovery.
Qt modules or build tools missingInstall matching Widgets, Network, PrintSupport, and Multimedia development files; tests also need Qt Test. Use QT_VERSION=5 or 6 consistently and matching moc/rcc.
Cannot open a displayUse the native GUI session or a working X11 display. Use --validate for a headless syntax check; test targets supply offscreen mode where appropriate.
Channel remains ERRORVerify the PV name, IOC availability, CA address environment (PVA environment for pva:// names), and read access. -debug -noerrorpopup exposes connection/access diagnostics on stderr.
Acknowledgement or output PV does not changeCheck local/global/passive mode and IOC write access. Failed acknowledgements remain visible; manual ACKT changes require an explicit retry. A refused $ACKPV stays pending in View → Runtime Overrides… until a Retry ACKPV submission is accepted, or Cancel or a reload discards it.
"Channel Access Exception" messagesAsynchronous CA errors, such as an IOC rejecting a write or a lost virtual circuit, are reported in the message area and operation log (and as a popup unless -noerrorpopup), as in ALH. After 25 reports one "Too many exceptions" notice is shown; later exceptions are printed only.
Cannot open logs or lock filesCreate the parent directory and check permissions on the selected files and checkpoint sidecar. A failed log destination change preserves the current destination. Cannot lock logging lock file means the lock file opened but its filesystem rejected POSIX locks (for example, NFS without a lock service); the instance stays Slave, so place the -Lfile lock on a filesystem with lock support.
Sound failsCheck the audio path, Qt Multimedia plugins/backend, output device, Silence Forever, and beep threshold. Muted fixture playback verifies decoding, not speaker output.
Helper or visual tests failCheck the test prerequisites; missing rpcbind, legacy executables, softIoc, or X11 are failures, not skipped coverage.
