Help and palettes

This manual is built into QtEDM and works offline, including its widget illustrations. Open it with Help > Help Topics or press F1 in the main window.

Using the Help Window

  • Browse: Click a topic in the sidebar, or just scroll. The sidebar highlights the section you are reading.
  • Search: Type in Find in help to search the whole manual. Matching ignores case, and every match is highlighted. Press Ctrl+F to jump to the search field.
  • Step through matches: Enter or F3 goes to the next match; Shift+Enter or Shift+F3 goes back. Search wraps around at either end.
  • Close: Press Escape or click Close. Opening Help again brings back the same window.

The Help window does not block other windows, so you can keep it open while you work. On macOS, use Command wherever this manual says Ctrl.

Help Menu

  • Help Topics (F1) – Opens this manual.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts – Opens the shortcut list.
  • Online Manual – Opens the QtEDM documentation website in your web browser. The Online manual button in the Help window does the same.
  • About QtEDM – Shows the QtEDM, Qt, and EPICS versions and the author credits. Its Open help button closes About and opens this manual.

Each palette also has a Help menu. Press F1 in a palette to open its section below.

Object Palette

Use the Object Palette in EDIT mode to add objects to a display:

  1. Click a tool. Tools are grouped into Graphics, Monitor, Controller, Container, and Misc sections, plus Plugins when plugins are loaded.
  2. Click and drag in a display to draw the object.
  3. Click the Select tool to go back to selecting and editing existing objects.

Help > Object Index opens the Supported Widgets list.

Resource Palette

The Resource Palette shows the properties of the selected object or of the display itself. Use it to set position and size, channels, colors, and object-specific options. The fields change to match the selection. Clicking a color field opens the Color Palette.

Color Palette

Click a color to apply it to the color property you are editing. The message at the bottom names that property and shows the selected color as a hex value and its MEDM color number.
